As you're grilling and entertaining this Memorial Day, keep food safety in mind

Memorial Day and cookouts go hand in hand.

But while summer entertaining is fun, you don't want to also deal with a food-borne illness.

Martha Ross is a Carilion registered dietitian. She says the main key to keeping foods out of the so-called "danger zone," is to keep cold food at or below 40 °F, in the refrigerator, in coolers, or in containers on ice.

Ross also recommends keeping hot foods hot, at or above 140 °F, on warming trays, in slow cookers or on the grill. She says to use a food thermometer to check the safe recommended temperatures.

Other tips we found include these reminders: never leave food out between 40 and 140 ˚F for more than two hours. If the temperature is above 90 °F, food should not be left out more than one hour.

Also, Ross says if you are feeling a bit sick after a cookout, here are the signs to watch for:

Nausea

Vomiting

Watery diarrhea

Abdominal pain and cramps

Fever
