ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Dr. Cynthia Morrow with the Roanoke-City Alleghany Health District provided an update Tuesday morning (see video above) on recent COVID-19 trends in the health district.

According to Dr. Morrow, almost 400 more people have tested positive for COVID in the last week in the Roanoke-City Alleghany Health Districts. During the update she called the spread of COVID-19 in the community significant, noting the steep climb in new cases.

She said about 80% of the people currently hospitalized are unvaccinated and that the average age of hospitalized patients is about 67-years-old.

While Dr. Morrow believes vaccines have prevented this recent outbreak from being even worse, she acknowledges the current spike is frustrating.

”I believe that what this is telling us is that because our numbers are so high, the pandemic of COVID-19 in our unvaccinated population is really impacting our vaccinated population as well,” she said.

Dr. Morrow said she recommends that everyone, vaccinated Virginians included, consider wearing a mask indoors for the time being.

She continued to encourage people to get a vaccine as soon as possible.
