  • Flash Flood Watch issued through Friday night
  • Slow-moving downpours may lead to flash flooding
  • Some improvements by late Saturday

It was another active afternoon of slow-moving showers and storms. While many areas managed to stay dry, others dealt with torrential downpours. This video is from flooding in Downtown Appomattox Thursday as a strong storm rolled through.

After the storms, a few breaks of sunshine even allowed for a long-lasting rainbow over the Roanoke Valley.

Showers and storms will be more gentle and not as numerous into the evening. Look for muggy conditions with lows in the low 60s.

Streams and rivers remain low. However, with downpours the past few days, some areas are starting to get the soil a bit more saturated, so we’ll need to watch Friday’s setup closely for potential flooding.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH ISSUED for most of the WDBJ7 viewing areas through Friday night. Stay alert if living along streams and low-lying areas which are more prone to flood.

A slow-moving front will drift into the area Friday into Saturday morning and will be the focal point for numerous showers and storms. Look for shower chances to increase by the afternoon along with the occasional thunderstorm that could bring a quick 1-3″ of rain over localized areas.

  • Localized Flash Flooding Possible
  • Highest flood risk for areas that have seen downpours earlier this week
  • Occasional Severe Thunderstorm (Hail, Strong Wind)

Widespread clouds will also limit our afternoon temperatures with highs in the upper 70s.

The backdoor front continues to push south with any showers and storms along the southern half of Virginia, along and south of Highway 460 and east of the Blue Ridge, through early afternoon.

Rain chances should taper off from north to south during the afternoon with breaks of sunshine expected. A few lingering showers/storms can’t be ruled out in the mountains. However, coverage and amounts should be much lower than earlier in the week as the air continues to dry out.

Still a few showers and storms, but most will be dry.

The weather should improve for outdoor plans as we go through the weekend with sunshine and very limited storm chances Sunday. Afternoon highs return to the mid 80s.

Next week, we do a pattern flip with calmer, drier and steadily warmer weather in the extended forecast.
