DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - The Danville Police Department will hold its Youth Police Academy for the next three weeks.

After having to cancel the program in 2020 due to the pandemic, the department has 36 youth from 10 to 17 years old participating.

The department started the academy in 2018, with the goal of connecting with the city’s youth.

“When you have a youth that wants to hang around you, they recognize whether you are sincere or not, because all of us are willing to build a relationship; I see the growth, to see them out and have them say, ‘That’s my officer,’ that means a lot,” said Sylvia Brooks, corporal of youth engagement with Danville Police.

The police department will hold a graduation for the participants at the end of the month.
