DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - UPDATE: Donzell M. Coles, 54, has been arrested as the suspect in two robberies and a third attempted robbery in Danville Wednesday.

Investigators charged Donzell Coles with robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

A member of the Danville City Sheriff’s Office was on his way to work Wednesday when he recognized Coles, who was being sought in this case, walking down a street and took him into custody.

EARLIER STORY: Danville Police believe the same man robbed two stores in Danville Tuesday afternoon.

A robber first showed a gun and demanded money from a cashier at the Family Dollar at 2639 North Main Street.

While police were at the scene, a report of a robbery at the Dollar General at 2398 West Main Street was relayed.

Using surveillance video, police concluded the robber is most likely the same for both cases. He is described as a Black man with a beard in his late 40s or 50s, wearing dark shorts, a dark shirt and a mask that covered his nose and mouth.

He is potentially in a white, four-door sedan that is believed to be a mid-nineties model Buick.

The robber left with cash from each store. Customers were present, but no injuries were reported.

Danville Police dispersed to other Family Dollar and Dollar General stores in the city to share information regarding these cases. Surrounding area law enforcement agencies were also made aware through a regional broadcast.
